MAA: Total vehicle sales up 8.04pct to 54,696 units in January, output up 20pct to meet CNY ...

KUALA LUMPUR: Total vehicle sales in January increased 8.04% to 54,696 units from 50,622 units recorded a year ago, as car makers ramped up production by about 20% to meet the Chinese New Year deliveries.

The Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) said on Tuesday the higher sales were also due to the availability of the 2011 production stocks while market conditions continued to be favourable.

'Sales volume for February is expected to be lower than January 2011,' said the industry body, attributing it to the seasonal shorter working month due to the Chinese New year holidays.

On the 54,696 units sold in January, it said 49,589 were passenger vehicles and the remaining 5,107 were commercial vehicles.

In January 2010, of the 50,622 vehicles sold, passenger vehicles accounted for 45,973 units and 4,649 were commercial vehicles.

The MAA noted that vehicle production, both passenger and commercial, increased by 8,987 units or 17.5% to 60,283 units from 51,296 units a year ago.

Production of passenger vehicles increased 19.6% to 55,217 units in January 2011 but commercial vehicle production dropped 1.13% to 5,066 units.
