KUALA LUMPUR: The FBM KLCI extended its gains for the fifth consecutive trading day on Monday, Feb 21, underpinned by strong gains in Maybank Genting, Tenaga and IOI Corporation amid a cautious broader market which saw penny stocks falling in active trade.
Maybank's gains after announcing its strong 2Q results at the midday break, injected some buying interest in the 30-stock index, nudging it up by 4.5 points.
At the close, the FBM KLCI was up 0.55% or 8.29 points to 1,525.85.'' The KLCI had fallen by more than 10 points to its intra-day low of 1,505.54.
Market breadth was negative with losers beating gainers 639 to 259, while 238 counters traded unchanged. Volume was 1.84 billion shares valued at RM2.06 billion.
Regional markets were mixed as the Shanghai Composite Index closed at a three-month high after China raised fuel prices, while Hong Kong stocks closed down as funds pulled out of emerging Asian equities, according to Reuters.
Global markets have also been jolted by the tensions in the Middle East, with the latest round of escalating violence in Libya.

Among the major gainers, Maybank rose 27 sen to RM8.86 after it posted net profit of RM1.125 billion for the second quarter ended Dec 31, 2010, which was 13.2% above the RM993.50 million recorded a year ago.
Maybank declared an interim cash dividend of 28 sen less 25% taxation for the the financial year ending June 30, 2011.
Genting rose 24 sen to RM10.58, Tenaga added 11 sen to RM6.37, IOI Corp seven sen to RM5.59, CIMB three sen to RM8.27, Genting Malaysia four sen to RM3.38, PPB 18 sen to RM16.86 while UMW added 12 sen to RM7.30.
Other gainers included Petronas Gas, Petronas Chemicals, Tasek, Kwantas, Malayan Flour, Tradewinds and Keck Seng.
Kulim, which had a strong run-up after announcing its corporate exercise, fell 26 sen to RM15.50, Cycle & Carriage 24 sen to RM4.85, MISC 14 sen to RM8.11, PacificMas 13 sen to RM4.56 while Top Glove fell 12 sen to RM5.05.
HWGB was the most active with 85.81 million shares done. It fell 15 sen to 64.5 sen while its warrants, HWGB-WB lost 19 sen to 52.5 sen with 78.36 million units done. Olympia fell 7.5 sen to 42 sen.
Other actives included SAAG, Iris Corp, Karambunai, Ramunia and Olympia.
