KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's inflation rate for August 2010 increased sharply by 2.1% from a year ago due to higher cost of food and non-alcoholic beverages.
The Statistics Department said on Wednesday, Sept 22 the consumer price index (CPI) increased by 0.4% from July. For the period January to August, the CPI increased by 1.5%.
'The index for food & non-alcoholic beverages and non-food for August 2010 compared to the same month in 2009 showed increases of 3.1% and 1.5% respectively. For January to August 2010, the index for food & non-alcoholic beverages and non-food increased by 2.2% and 1.2% respectively.
'Compared to the previous month, the index for food & non-alcoholic beverages and non-food increased by 0.3% and 0.4% respectively,' it said.
