KUALA LUMPUR: The FBM KLCI extended its gains on Tuesday, Sept 21 in line with the generally positive investor sentiment across the region following the overnight higher closing at Wall Street, and ahead of the US Federal Reserve meeting on Tuesday.
According to Reuters,''the central bank is expected to renew a promise to keep its portfolio from shrinking but is not seen taking new steps to ease monetary policy. On Monday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 145.77 points, or 1.37%, at 10,753.62. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 17.12 points, or 1.52%, at 1,142.71. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 40.22 points, or 1.74%, at 2,355.83.
At the regional markets, Japan's Nikkei 225 was up 0.40% to 9,664.52, Singapore's Straits Times Index added 0.42% to 3,093.88, Taiwan's Taiex rose 0.37% to 8,217.13, the Shanghai Composite Index up 0.11% to 2,591.61 and the Hong Kong Hang Seng Index opened 0.4% higher at 22,067.81. The South Korean stock exchange is closed Tuesday.
On Bursa Malaysia, the FNM KLCI was up 4.96 points to 1,474.65 at 10am. Gainers led losers by 263 to 139, while 232 counters traded unchanged. Volume was 183.8 million shares valued at RM207.54 million.
The local benchmark index was also given a lift by advancing key blue chips including Sime Darby, Genting, Maybank, CIMB and Genting Malaysia.
Among the major gainers at mid-morning, BAT rose 46 sen to RMRM46.10, Nestle gaines 30 sen to RM42, DFZ Capital up 23 sen to RM3.79, KLK was up 22 sen to RM17.20, Plenitude up 15 sen to RM4.64, Kulim gained 14 sen to RM8.53, Petronas Gas up 12 sen to RM10.96 and Hong Leong Bank up 11 sen to RM9.20.
Sime and Genting added four sen each to RM8.34 and RM10.22, Maybank and Genting Malaysia rose two sen each to RM8.73 and RM3.25, while CIMB gained one sen to RM8.32.
Rubber glove makers fell this morning after OSK Research downgraded the sector to neutral from overweight. Top Glove fell 18 sen to RM5.62 and Supermax lost five sen to RM4.30.
Among the other decliners, BHIC fell seven sen to RM4.32, C I Holdings, Padini and HELP fell five sen each to RM3.22 m RM4.60 and RM4.73, while AIC fell 4.5 sen to 80 sen.
Asia EP was the most actively traded counter with 12.9 million shares done. The stock was unchanged at 8 sen.
Other actives included KNM, Berjaya Corp, Timecom, Tejari and Genting Malaysia.
