FBM KLCI succumbs to mild profit taking

KUALA LUMPUR: The FBM KLCI extended its losses on Monday, March 14 as it succumbed to some mild profit taking in late trade, with banks and key blue chip stocks retreating.

Regional markets were mixed in the aftermath of the Japan earthquake, with the Nikkei 225 tumbling more than 7.5% at one point. The Hong Kong and Shanghai markets edged up as coal and steel players advanced, according to Reuters.

The FBM KLCI pared down its earlier losses and closed a marginal 0.27 point lower at 1,495.35. The index had earlier risen to its intra-day high of 1,500.21, reversing from a low of 1,480.53.

Losers led gainers by 352 to 308, while 291 counters traded unchanged. Volume was 802.36 million shares valued at RM1.18 billion.

At regional markets, Japan's Nikkei 225 fell 6.18% to 9,620.49, Taiwan's Taiex lost 0.56% to 8,520.02 and the Singapore Straits Times Index fell 0.41% to 3,030.86.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index added 0.41% to 23,345.88, the Shanghai Composite Index up 0.13% to 2,937.63 while South Korea's Kospi rose 0.80% to 1,971.23.

On Bursa Malaysia, the major losers included Nestle that fell 58 sen to RM45.20, BAT down 48 sen to RM45.12, Petronas Gas 28 sen to RM11.24, Ewein 21.5 sen to 78.5 sen, Tenaga down 17 sen to RM6.03, AIC and GAB fell 14 sen each to RM2.06 and RM9.70, while Kluang and SHL lost 11 sen each to RM2.61 and RM1.22.

Among banks, CIMB lost six sen to RM7.92 while Public Bank and AMMB fell four sen each to RM12.96 and RM6.32.

Berjaya Retail Bhd shares were actively trade after Pemier Merchandise Sdn Bhd (PMSB), which controls 58.71% of the company issued notice to take it private at 65 sen per share.

The stock added 21.5 sen to 64 sen with 76 million shares done.

Other actives included Perisai, SAAG, Petronas Chemicals, Dialog, HWGB and Tanco.

Meanwhile, timber-related stocks advanced on expectation of an increase of demand for timber products following the earthquake in Japan.

Jaya Tiasa was up 16 sen to RM5.01, Ta Ann added eight sen to RM4.84 while WTK was up seven sen to RM1.33.

Glove manufacturers also rose today, with Top Glove up 16 sen to RM5.05, Hartalega six sen to RM5.60, Latexx and Adventa five sen each to RM2.70 and RM2.45, Supermax three sen to RM4.18 and Kossan two sen to RM3.02.

Other gainers included Paramount, Lafarge Malayan Cement, Petronas Chemicals, HELP and MISC.
