KLCI climbs above 1,490-level at mid-day

KUALA LUMPUR: The FBM KLCI climbed above the 1,490-level for the first time in a week on Monday, Aug 15, in line with the advance at key regional markets.

A modest 0.4% rise in US stock futures also encouraged some bargain hunting in Asian markets, but investors may be more likely to sell into rallies than buy into any dips ahead of fresh readings on the US and euro zone economies this week, according to Reuters.

Japanese shares were also boosted by data showing Japan's economy shrank less than expected in April-June following a devastating earthquake and tsunami in March, it said.

At 12.30pm, the FBM KLCI was up 9.19 points to 1,492.86 , lifted by gains at select blue chips. Gainers led losers by 434 to 194, while 249 counters traded unchanged. Volume was 494.26 million shares valued at RM529.95 million.

The ringgit strengthened 0.56% to 2.9870 versus the US dollar; crude palm oil futures for the third month delivery rose RM30 per tonne to RM3,013, US light crude oil added one cent to US$85.39 while gold eased US$2.45 an ounce to US$1,744.45.

At the regional markets, Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index jumped 2.29% to 20,069.05, Japan's Nikkei 225 rose 1.26% to 9,076.37, Taiwan's Taiex added 1.96% to 7,786.46, Singapore's Straits Times Index gained 0.59% to 2,867.36 and the Shanghai Composite Index edged up 0.18% to 2,597.86.

South Korea's markets were closed for the Liberation Day national holiday.

Among the gainers on Bursa Malaysia, Sindora rose 60 sen to RM2.65,prompting a query from Bursa Malaysia Securities.

BAT and Petronas Dagangan added 38 sen each to RM44 and RM17.16, Batu Kawan 20 sen to RM15.60, Amway and KLK 18 sen each to RM9.20 and RM21.06, Petronas Chemicals 17 sen to RM6.50, DiGi 16 sen to RM29.96 and AirAsia 14 sen to RM3.59.

DVM was the most actively traded counter with 44.95 million shares done. The stock fell four sen to 17.5 sen.

Other actives included AirAsia, Ramunia, Asiapac, MAS and Dutaland.

Decliners included Chin Teck, Nilai, Widetech, United PLANTATION []s, BHIC, Nakamichi and Warisan
