KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia must leverage off international partnerships in global science, TECHNOLOGY [] and innovation (STI) to gain a competitive advantage in areas of high technology, according to Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT) joint chairman Tan Sri Dr Ahmad Tajuddin Ali
He said there was a need to advance the country's presence in and access to international scientific research, technology and innovation policy communities by bringing together thought-leadership to support and drive Malaysian innovation.
In a statement June 29, Tajuddin said these efforts were key to Malaysian science and technology leadership and was intimately connected to aspirations of high-income nation status.
He pointed to recent efforts by the Prime Minister's Department to raise the profile of Malaysia in science, technology and innovation networks world-wide such as the recent formation of MIGHT International and the Global Science and Innovation Advisory Council (GSIAC), of which MIGHT is the co-secretariat with the New York Academy of Sciences.
'MIGHT International, GSIAC and other global science initiatives under the Prime Minister's Department should go beyond open access to published research findings to facilitate more effective and extensive global sharing of not only data and information, but also R&T policies, facilities, tools and materials.
'These steps will help Industry players spot early emerging business opportunities and help Malaysia as a whole springboard onto the world stage in the areas of STI for the first time in its history,' he said.
Both MIGHT International and GSIAC were launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in May during a visit to New York and partner Malaysian industry and government experts with global counter parts in mapping future objectives in STI for Malaysia.
Meanwhile, MIGHT president and CEO Mohd Yusoff Sulaiman said MIGHT's recent repositioning under the purview of the Science Advisor to the Prime Minister as key to the organisation's transformation to an international entity.
'MIGHT is now positioned to upscale its high technology objectives, achieve global its ambitions and deliver for members on an international scale.
'Through activities and partnerships with the Korean Institute of Science and Technology Evaluation and Planning and the New York Academy of Sciences ' GSIAC - we are now better positioned than ever to provide a platform for members to access the global science, technology and innovation community,' he said.
