KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's inflation rate rose strongly in April, with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) up 3.2% from a year ago and rising by 0.2% from March on higher food prices and non-alcoholic beverages.
The Statistics Department said on Wednesday, May 18 the CPI for the period January to April increased by 2.9% from the previous corresponding period.
Food & non-alcoholic beverages account for 30.3% of the CPI.
'The index for food & non-alcoholic beverages and non-food for April 2011 showed increases of 4.9% and 2.5% respectively as compared to the same month in 2010.
'For the period January to April 2011, the index for food & non-alcoholic beverages and non-food increased by 4.5% and 2.2% respectively,' it added.
The trend was also similar when compared to March where food & non-alcoholic beverages and non-food increased by 0.3% and 0.2%.
