Asian markets in sea of red, KLCI dn nearly 7pts

KUALA LUMPUR: All key Asian markets were in a sea of red in the morning session on Monday, May 23 on mounting worries about the Europe debt crisis while China's factories expanded at the slowest pace in 10 months, according to the May data.

Worries about the economic outlook saw investors taking profit on banking stocks including Hong Leong Financial Group, Hong Leong Bank, Maybank and AMMB. Weakening crude palm oil prices also put pressure on PLANTATION [] stocks.

At 12.30pm, the FBM KLCI fell 6.79 points or 0.45% to 1,534.24. Turnover was 399.40 million shares valued at RM482.97 million. There were 156 gainers, 502 losers and 264 stocks unchanged.

Light crude oil fell US$1.33 to US$98.77 while Brent crude for July fell $1.03 to $111.36 and crude palm oil futures lost RM30 to RM3,360.

The US dollar rose as much as 0.76% against a basket of currencies to its highest level since March 30, Reuters reported. The ringgit weakened to 3.0455 to the US dollar, down 0.0335 to the greenback from 3.0120.

Reuters also reported China factories expanded in May at their slowest pace in 10 months while price pressures eased, a purchasing managers' index showed on Monday, adding to evidence that the economy is moderating as a tighter policy starts to bite.

Japan's Nikkei 225 fell 1.56% to 9,457.27, Hang Seng Index 1.73% to 22,798.28, Shanghai Composite Index 1.94% to 2,8903.15, Taiwan's Taiex'' 0.93% to 8,755.14, South Korea's Kospi 2.22% to 2,064.73 and Singapore's Straits Times Index 1.37% to 3,125.17.

At Bursa Malaysia, Maybank fell six sen to RM8.81 and dragged the FBM KLCI down by 1.04 points, AMMB shed 10 sen to RM6.41, dragging the index down by 0.71 of a point. HLFG fell 24 sen to RM11.32 and HL Bank 22 sen to RM11.82.

Among plantations, IOI Corp fell six sen to RM5.25, pushing the index down by 0.94 of a point, while KL Kepong shed 34 sen to RM21.66 and Sime three sen to RM9.11.

Esso led the gainers' list, up 36 sen to RM5.57, Keck Seng 34 sen to RM4.49 and F&N 12 sen to RM19.50 while Boustead added 12 sen to RM5.89.
