Mild profit taking chips away FBM KLCI's gains

KUALA LUMPUR: The FBM KLCI slipped into negative territory at the mid-day break on Tuesday, March 22 as some mild profit taking saw key blue chips giving up some of their gains'' but the broader market displayed its resilience while Sarawak related stocks continued their advance.

Regional markets, however, advanced as Japan's Nikkei 225 rose nearly 4% after engineers made some progress in containing radiation from its earthquake-damaged nuclear power plant.

However, smoke and steam rose from two of the most threatening reactors at Japan's quake-crippled nuclear plant on Tuesday, suggesting the battle to avert a disastrous meltdown and stop the spread of radiation was far from won, according to Reuters.

At the mid-day break, the FBM KLCI shed 0.03% or 0.47 of a point to 1,508.41, weighed by losses including at MISC, Tenaga, Genting and DiGi.'' Gainers led losers by 407 to 226, while 264 counters traded unchanged. Volume was 836.66 million shares valued at RM778.99 million.

The ringgit strengthened 0.23% to 3.0335 versus the US dollar; crude palm oil futures for the third month delivery fell RM52 per tonne to RM3,368, crude oil rose five cents per barrel to US$102.38 while gold gained US$2.05 per troy ounce to US$1,429.73.

Among the major losers on Bursa Malaysia, MISC fell 19 sen to RM7.75, Tenaga five sen to RM6.23, Genting four sen to RM10.38, DiGi six sen to RM27.6o, Genting Malaysia two sen to RM3.41 and BAT 18 sen to RM45.92.

Warisan lost 21 sen to RM2.07, F&N 20 sen to RM15.60, Ewein and AIRB 19 sen each to 80 sen and RM1.64, Lafarge Malayan Cement 15 sen to RM7.36, Paos 14.5 sen to 65.5 sen and Ta Ann lost 12 sen to RM5.88.

United PLANTATION []s climbed 80 sen to RM17.40; Ekovest added 26 sen to RM3.67, Panasonic and LPI Capital 16 sen each to RM21 and RM13.46, Petronas Dagangan 14 sen to RM14.84, Integrax and KLK 12 sen each to RM1.56 and RM20.84, while Sunway City gained 11 sen to RM4.36.

Sarawak-based companies extended their gains following the dissolution of the state assembly there to pave way for state elections. Cahya Mata Sarawak was up four sen to RM2.73, Encorp 3.5 sen to 94.5 sen, while HSL and Zecon added one sen each to RM1.82 and 53.5 sen.

Perisai was the most active with 50.1 million shares done. The stock added five sen to 72.5 sen.

Other actives included HWGB, SAAG, Olympia, Borneo Oil, Tanco, Ramunia and DRB-Hicom.
