FBM KLCI pares down gains at mid-morning

KUALA LUMPUR: Asian stocks advanced on Tuesday. March 22 amidst cautious trade in line with the gains at Japan's stock markets that resumed trade this morning, as Japan made some progress in containing radiation from its earthquake-damaged nuclear power plant.

Shares elsewhere in Asia posted modest gains, after bouncing on Monday when Tokyo markets were closed for a holiday, said Reuters.

US stocks rose around 1.5% on Monday, buoyed by AT&T's move to buy Deutsche Telecom, it said.

The FBM KLCI was up 0.98 point to 1,509.86 at mid-morning.'' It had earlier risen to a high of 1,514.20.

Gainers led losers by 302 to 132, while 194 counters traded unchanged. Volume was 384.03 million shares valued at RM262.34 million.

At the regional markets, Japan's Nikkei 225 rose 2.94% to 9,477.49, Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index added 0.26% to 22, 744.35, Taiwan's Taiex gained 0.61% to 8,519.50, South Koreas' Kospi was up 0.41% to 2,011.63, Singapore's Straits Times Index rose 0.13% to 2,987.33 while the Shanghai Composite Index edged up 0.04% to 2,910.43.

Maybank Investment Bank Bhd'' head of retail research and chief chartist Lee Cheng Hooi in a note to clients on March 22 said he expects the index to remain in a minor rebound in the short term and to be bearish in the medium term.

"Due to the DJIA's rebound tone last night, we will see the FBM KLCI in an initial gap-up mode today, with latter day profit-taking activities on rallies," he said.

The top gainer at mid-morning was United PLANTATION [] that added 80 sen to RM17.40; Stone Master gained 30 sen to 80 sen, Panasonic 16 sen to RM21, LPI Capital 14 sen to RM13.44, Ekovest and Integrax added 12 sen each to RM3.53 and RM1.56, while KLK and KYM were up eight sen each to RM20.80 and RM2.12.

Among the decliners, BAT fell 50 sen to RM45.60, Jaya Tiasa 20 sen to RM5.30, Lafarge Malayan Cement 18 sen to RM7.33, Ta Ann 14 sen to RM5.86, AIRB 13 sen to RM1.70, Sui Wah seven sen to RM1.30, while Hap Seng and Java fell four sen each to RM6.47 and 78 sen.

HWGB was the most actively traded counter with 26.2 million shares. The stock added 1.5 sen to 65 sen.

Other actives included Olympia, Borneo Oil, SAAG, MK Land and Tanco.
