KULIM: BMW Group Malaysia plans to increase its production by 45% to over 4,000 units next year, with the launch of its locally-assembled BMW X1 in Malaysia.
Its managing director, Geoffrey Briscoe, said this year BMW produced less than 3,000 units as sales globally were hit by the economic uncertainty.
"Although the planned output increase is big we have the capacity to handle more cars and with the economy improving, we think it's going to be okay," he said after the launch of XI by Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry, Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir, on Tuesday, Dec 14.
He said the X1, which was introduced in Malaysia in April this year, has received over 200 bookings.
"The X1 will be a key contributor to BMW's business success and profitability in the country. We expect to double the sales of X1 next year," he said.
Briscoe said the introduction of the X1 was a significant achievement for the company after assembling the BMW 3 and BMW 5 series at the Kulim plant for 27 years.
Going forward, he said, BMW planned to launch the X3, BMW 1 and BMW 6 series in Malaysia next year.
The petrol-powered X1 is priced at RM238,000 and the diesel-driven X1 priced at RM298,000. ' Bernama
