September global semicon sales up 2.9% on-month

KUALA LUMPUR: Global sales of semiconductors totalled US$26.5 billion in September, up 2.9% from August's US$25.8 billion, underpinned by strong demand in consumer and industrial electronic products.

The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) reported on Monday, Nov 1 sales for the third quarter of 2010 totalled US$79.4 billion, up 6.1% from 2Q's US$74.8 billion sales.

'Third quarter sales were 26.2% higher than the US$62.9 billion for the like period in 2009. All monthly sales numbers represent a three-month moving average,' said the US-based SIA.

SIA President Brian Toohey said semiconductor sales had grown steadily in all regions through the third quarter of 2010, with strong demand in consumer and industrial electronic products.

Inventory for the industry continues to be generally in balance with demand, he said.

'We could see moderation in the growth rate through the end of the year as demand for consumer electronic products such as personal computers, flat panel televisions, and mobile devices are potentially impacted by continuing economic uncertainty,' Toohey added.
