Scomi inks MoU with Brazilian state-linked firm

KUALA LUMPUR: SCOMI GROUP BHD [] has entered into a memorandum of understanding with SC Parcerias SA, an entrepreneurial arm of the government of the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, to explore opportunities in drilling fluids and drilling waste management for the oil and gas industry in that country.

The MoU was signed here last Friday, June 4 by Scomi Brazil country president Hilmy Zaini Zainal and SC Parcerias president and director Gerson Pedro Berti.

In a statement on Monday, Scomi, a leading provider of oilfield services to the oil and gas industry and one of three integrated monorail system providers in the world, said the partnership would see it providing expertise in drilling fluids and drilling waste management.

SC Parcerias is a Brazilian public-private entity formed by the Santa Catarina government to generate investment for the state, through equity, by entering into contracts, arrangements or public-private partnerships to grant public services.

Scomi said SC Parcerias aimed to improve the state's transportation infrastructure, operation and provision of roads, utilities and property, the expansion, modernisation and CONSTRUCTION [] of ports, expansion of water system and sewage system, construction and renovation of entertainment facilities, leisure, and increasing tourism.

"Increasing oil production has always been a long-term goal of the Brazilian government and we are confident our partnership with Scomi will boost our efforts to meet this goal.

"Scomi is highly recognised worldwide in developing environmentally friendly drilling fluids and drilling waste management systems which is in line with the objective of Sapiens Park to introduce cutting edge solutions in Brazil," said Berti.

Scomi said SC Parcerias, with its strong ties to the Santa Catarina government, would allow it to also conduct R&D at Sapiens Park, an "innovation park" located in the state which focuses on information and communication TECHNOLOGY [], multimedia, bioengineering and nanotechnology.

Scomi group CEO Shah Hakim Zain said: "Today's announcement demonstrates the continued importance of Brazil to Scomi.'' We are looking forward to joining with a leading company in Brazil to meet the needs of oil and gas customers in that growing market.

He said besides oil and gas, there were also opportunities for Scomi's growing public transportation business, and Scomi was well-positioned to meet the need for improvement in urban transportation for the city of Florianopolis in the state.
