KUALA LUMPUR: The Leading Index (LI) which monitors Malaysia's economic performance in advance dropped by 0.2%''in July to 110.6 points from 110.8 points achieved in the previous month, according to the Department of Statistics, Malaysia.
In a statement Wednesday, Sept 21 it said the three components that contributed to the decrease were Bursa Malaysia INDUSTRIAL INDEX [], real imports of semi conductors and number of new companies registered, which respectively recorded negative 0.1%.
However, the annual change of LI was remained at 1.9% in July 2011, it said.
Meanwhile, the Coincident Index (CI), which measures current economic activity, grew by 1.1% in July 2011, it said.
The main components that contributed to the increase were capacity utilisation in manufacturing sector (0.7%) and volume index of retail trade (0.6%).
The annual change of CI increased to 5.8% in July 2011 compared with 3.0% in the previous month, it said.
'The growth of LI and CI showed an encouraging rate in July 2011.
'Supported by the level of Diffusion Index for both indexes above 50.0%, this suggests that the economy is expected to expand at a moderate rate in the near term,' it said.
