KUALA LUMPUR: The FBM KLCI rose firmly on Monday, Aug 15 in line with the gains at regional markets but closed just shy of the 1,500-point level.
Shares in Asia were boosted by data showing Japan's economy shrank less than expected in April-June following a devastating earthquake and tsunami in March.
World stocks climbed further out of their August hole on Monday, lifted by signs of earlier-than-expected recovery in Japan and a growing belief that shares may now be cheap, according to Reuters.
The FBM KLCI rose 1.08% or 16.07 points to close at 1,499.74, lifted by gains including at Petronas Dagangan, BAT, HLFG and KLK.
Gainers beat losers by 627 to 190, while 233 counters traded unchanged. Volume was 1.07 billion shares valued at RM1.45 billion.
At the regional markets, Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index jumped 3.26% to 20,260.10, Taiwan's Taiex rose 2.39% to 7,819.39, Japan's Nikkei 225 up 1.37% to 9,086.41, the Shanghai Composite Index gained 1.30% to 2,626.77 and Singapore's Straits Times Index edged up 0.84% to 2,874.40.
South Korea's markets were closed for the Liberation Day national holiday.
On Bursa Malaysia, ''Petronas Dagangan jumped 72 sen to RM17.50, BAT 50 sen to RM2.65, HLFG and KLK 34 sen each to RM12.18 and RM21.22, Batu Kawan and Hong Leong Bank 24 sen each to RM15.64 and RM12.84, AirAsia 22 sen to RM3.67 and Ann Joo 21 sen to RM2.80.
Sindora rose 60 sen to RM2.65 but trading in its securities was halted from 2.30pm. Kulim (Malaysia) Bhd, which owns 74.99% of Sindora, plans to acquire the remaining 25.01% of the company.
DVM was the actively traded counter with 78.93 million shares done. The stock fell 6.5 sen to 15 sen .
Two shareholders of DVM, owning 15.4% of the shares, have requisitioned for an EGM to seek the removal of four directors with immediate effect
DVM said on Monday, Aug 15 the two shareholders are Raymond Yip Wai Man and Christian Kwok-Leun Yau Heillesen.
Other actives included AirAsiam MAS, Dutaland, Ramunia and Axiata.
Among the decliners, Nilai fell 11 sen to RM1.16, United PLANTATION []s 10 sen to RM18.50, Nakamichi 8.5 sen to 80 sen, Chin Teck eight sen to RM8.30, Warisan seven sen to RM2.33 and PLB 6.5 sen to 80 sen.
