KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's industrial production index (IPI) in April fell 2.2% from a year ago, following a decrease in the manufacturing sector output but there was a significant 7.6% decline from the revised March data.

The Statistics Department said on Thursday, June 9 that April's decline was due to the decrease in manufacturing (0.4%), mining (6.9%) and electricity (0.7%).

It also said the IPI in March 2011 was revised positive 2.9% on-year. It added the cumulative index for January to April increased by 1.5% from the previous corresponding period in 2010.

'The growth for the first four months of 2011 increased by 4.3% as compared with the same period of last year,' it said.

The decrease in the manufacturing output in April was due to decreases in electrical and electronics products (15.3%); transport equipment and other manufactures (17.5%); and wood products, furniture, paper products and printing (1.3%).

It said the mining output in April declined 6.9% on-year, mainly due to decreases in crude oil index (8.9%) and natural gas index (2.9%).
