KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's manufacturing sector created more jobs in February while overall salaries showed an increase and there was an improvement in productivity on a year-on-year basis, according to the Statistics Department.
It said on Monday, April 11 the total number of employees in the manufacturing sector in February 2011 was 1,018,533, which was an increase of 4,858 persons or 0.5% compared with January.
On a year-on-year, the number of workers employed increased by 66,344 persons or 7.0% from 952,189 persons in February 2010. Total employees in January 2011 were a revised positive 6.7% on-year to record 1,013,675 workers.
The Statistics Department said the total amount of salaries paid in February 2011 rose 5.5% or RM118.4 million from a year ago.
Salaries & wages paid in January 2011 was a revised positive 9.1% on-year to record RM2,348.5 million.
However, salaries & wages paid in February 2011 decreased 2.8% or RM64.7 million on-month to register RM2.283 billion, it said.
'Average salaries & wages paid per employee in February 2011 decreased 3.2% month- on-month to register RM2,242. Average salaries & wages paid per employee in February 2011 also decreased by 1.4% as compared with the corresponding month of the previous year.
'Average salaries & wages paid per employee in January 2011 was a revised positive 2.3% year-on-year to record RM 2,317,' it said.
Productivity or average sales value per employee in February 2011 declined 5.1% on-month to register RM43,783. Productivity in February 2011, however, increased by 3.7% on-year.
Malaysia's manufacturing sector recorded sales value of RM44.6 billion in February, 2011, up 10.9% or RM4.4 billion from the RM40.2 billion a year ago.
The Statistics Department said on-month, the sales value fell 4.7% or RM2.2 billion from January when the sales were a revised positive 7.6% on-year at RM46.8 billion.
'The year-on-year increase in the sales value during the current month as compared with the corresponding month of the previous year was generated by the growth in the sales value of 67 industries (57.8%) out of 116 industries covered in the survey,' it said.
The Statistics Department said the five major industries whose sales value increased significantly were manufacture of refined petroleum products (47.5%), manufacture of television and radio receivers, sound or video recording or reproducing apparatus, and associated goods (46.2%), manufacture of other basic industrial chemicals except fertilisers and nitrogen compounds (27.3%), manufacture of plastics in primary forms and of synthetic rubber (51.9%), and manufacture of semiconductor devices (12.0%).
The decrease in the sales value in February when compared with January was due to the drop of the sales value of 95 industries (81.9%) out of 116 industries covered in the survey.
The four major industries whose sales value decreased were manufacture of refined petroleum products (8.1%), manufacture of computer and computer peripherals (21.8%), manufacture of motor vehicles (23.5%), and manufacture of basic iron and steel products (12.8%).
