KUALA LUMPUR: Broadband service providers has each gained about 500 to 1,000 new customers who registered for their service during the Broadband Squad Programme promotion drive participated by the companies.
Secretary-general of the Information Communication and Culture Ministry Datuk Kamaruddin Siaraf said based on a study done, during the promotion drive, the public would come to get information while the companies involved would offer their broadband service.
He said when visiting the places, the broadband squads would explain the benefits of broadband service to potential customers.
"These squads were specially formed to promote broadband among the people through face-to-face interaction. We have six teams covering Sabah, Sarawak, and East, West, Central, North and South Peninsular Malaysia.
"Each squad comprises representatives of the service providers, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), my ministry and the broadband icon travelling in vehicles for the promotion," he said in the Helo Malaysia programme over Bernama TV on Tuesday, Sept 27.
Kamaruddin said the broadband squads targeted to visit 500 destinations nationwide since July until December this year to promote broadband to the public.
MCMC chairman Tan Sri Khalid Ramli said the national broadband penetration rate had reached 42% up to September.
"This is a good increase compared with the percentage achieved in 2008. With such an increase so far, it is not impossible for the penetration to reach 50% of households by the year end," he said.
Kamaruddin and Khalid agreed that through the broadband service promotion exercise, they could narrow the urban-rural digital divide.
They also hoped that customers would be patient if they were experiencing coverage problems in certain areas.
"We admit the coverage is still not complete but we are trying our best to ensure that everyone is able to receive the service," said Khalid. ' Bernama
