FBM KLCI closes at historic high of 1,526

KUALA LUMPUR: The FBM KLCI closed at an all-time high of 1,526 on Tuesday, Nov 9 as buying picked up in the afternoon session, underpinned by solid gains in Maybank, CIMB and also YTL Power and the positive sentiment from Europe.

It closed 6.69 points higher at 1,526.53. Turnover was 1.64 billion shares valued at RM2.13 billion. There were 447 gainers, 412 losers and 207 stocks unchanged.

The buying of index-linked stocks also helped galvanised sentiment after the market showed some sign of weakness in late morning following the cautious key Asian markets but this later offset by the firmer European bourses.

Japan's Nikkei 225 fell 0.39% to 9,694.49, Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index fell 1.02% to 24,710.60, Shanghai's Composite Index eased 0.78% to 3,135 but Taiwan's Taiex added 0.26% to 1,947.46 and Singapore's Straits Times Index 0.17% higher at 3,305.91.

European shares hit a two-year high on Tuesday, with several companies including Vodafone and Barclays gaining after upbeat profit statements, and with the macroeconomic backdrop boosting sentiment.

At 0947 GMT, the FTSEurofirst 300 index of top European shares was up 0.4 percent at 1,115.53 points, after reaching 1,116.19, the highest since September 2008.

According to Reuters, the European benchmark is up more than 72% from its lifetime low of March, 2009, with several major economies having emerged from recession, helped by stimulus from governments and central banks worldwide.

At Bursa Malaysia, Maybank rose 19 sen to RM9.29, shoring up the 30-stock index by 3.26 points. CIMB's 15 sen gain to RM8.50 and YTL Power's 25 sen to RM2.60 helped nudged the index by 2.66 points and 2.32 points.

F&N held on its gains, closing RM1.08 higher at RM15.70 while YTL added 10 sen to RM8.05 and PPB 16 sen to RM19.40.

OSK jumped 24 sen to RM1.91 with 23.6 million shares done as it benefited from rising trading volume and the bullish market sentiment.

EPIC charted one of its best days, adding 29 sen to RM2.38 while AZRB added nine sen to RM1.12. AZRB said it was selling its 21.26% stake in EPIC to Lembaga Tabung Amanah Warisan Negeri Terengganu for RM111.5 million.

KFC-WB surged 29 sen to RM2.25m QSR 24 sen to RM6.03 and KFC 19 sen to RM4.48.

Profit taking saw KLK shedding 24 sen to RM20.38, Kulim 24 sen also to RM12.66 while Sapura Resources lost 19 sen to RM1.35.
