KUALA LUMPUR: The local stock market stayed in positive territory at mid-morning on Tuesday, June 29, tracking gains in other Asian markets, with consumer goods exporters expected to gain following data showing personal spending in the US rose in May.
US stocks posted small losses on Monday as a drop in energy shares offset gains in consumer shares, which rose after the government said personal spending rose moderately in May, exceeding expectations, according to Reuters.
At the regional markets, Japan's Nikkei 225 added 0.58% to 9,749.76 points, Taiwan's Taiex Index up 0.77% to 7,558.21 points, the Singaporean Straits Times Index 0.36% to 2,880.43 points, the South Korean Kospi Index up 1,736.08 points while Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index was little changed at 20,727.45 points when it opened for trade on Tuesday.
The Shanghai Composite Index, however, declined 0.15% to 2,531.37 points.
At Bursa Malaysia, the FBM KLCI gained 2.87 points to 1,328.41 points at 10am. Gainers led losers by 186 to 125, while 161 counters traded unchanged. Volume was 128.53 million shares valued at RM121.15 million.
Among the major gainers, PPB Group added 18 sen to RM16.48, MAS four sen to RM2.13, Sime Darby, PLUS and Axiata three sen each to RM8.13, RM3.42 and RM3.96, while Petgas rose five sen to RM9.90.
CIMB and Tanjong added two sen each to RM7.07 and RM17.78, Maybank one sen to RM7.60 and Berjaya Corp two sen to RM1.25.
DFZ Capital rose 28 sen to RM3.55 after ATLAN HOLDINGS BHD [] had proposed a reverse takeover of Esmart Holdings Ltd, which is listed on the Catalist board of the Singapore Exchange by injecting two of its subsidiaries.
Atlan will inject DFZ Capital and Darul Metro Sdn Bhd into Esmart under the corporate exercise for an aggregate consideration of S$285.35 million (RM670.58 million).
Malaysian Mosaics rose to its 52-week high of RM1.64 after The Edge Financial Daily reported that the company could be taken private soon. At 10am, the stock was up 7.75% or 11 sen to RM1.53.
Other gainers this morning included Top Glove, Pharmaniaga, Lysaght, Genting PLANTATION []s and Sinotop.
Kimlun Corporation Bhd, which made its Main Market debut today, was among the most actively traded stocks with 16.6 million shares done at mid-morning. The counter added half a sen to 97.5 sen.
Other actives included Kumpulan Europlus, Sinotop, Olympia, Talam, BCorp, Time and Axiata.
Losers at mid-morning included Malayan Flour Mills, Warisan, Jobstreet, Hai-O and PLB.
