KUALA LUMPUR: The FBM KLCI clawed back to close above the 1,560-point level on Tuesday, July 26 as key regional markets brushed off the deadlocked talks to raise the US debt ceiling.
Unless lawmakers reach a deal to raise the US$14.3 trillion ceiling by August 2, the United States faces a technical default on some of its US$9.6 trillion in outstanding government bonds.
Meanwhile, European markets were most in the red in early trade as Spain's short-term cost of borrowing climbed to three-year highs at an auction on Tuesday, showing strong EU action on Greece last week has failed to cap worries that Europe's debt crisis could still spread, according to Reuters.
Spain sold 2.9 billion euros (US$4.16 billion) of 3- and 6-month Treasury bills, though demand was lower and yields on both issues were higher than at the last of the regular sales in June, it said.
On Bursa Malaysia, the FBM KLCI edged up 0.14% or 2.17 points to close at 1,561.77.
Gainers overtook losers by 374 to 334, while 325 counters traded unchanged. Volume was 1.05 billion shares valued at RM1.55 billion.
