TM, Axiata appoint KPMG, Shearn Delamore for improper payments probe

KUALA LUMPUR: TELEKOM MALAYSIA BHD [] and Axiata Group Bhd have jointly decided to appoint KPMG Corporate Services Sdn Bhd as forensic accountants to assist in an internal probe over alleged payments received by TM staff from Alcatel Lucent.

TM said on Monday, Jan 3, 2011 that Shearn Delamore & Co. was appointed the legal adviser.

TM said its board had approved the setting up of a sub-committee of the board audit committee to conduct an independent and comprehensive internal investigation into the alleged improper payments to TM employees.

It said the sub-committee was set up following its Dec 29 announcement over the settlement case of Alcatel Lucent with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Department of Justice (DoJ) that payments had been made to some TM employees.

'The board audit committee sub-committee will submit their report and findings to the board audit committee for further guidance and the next course of action,' it said.

The sub-committee is chaired by Tunku Datuk Mahmood Fawzy Tunku Muhiyiddin, a member of TM board. Fawzy is also a member of TM's'' board audit committee and chairman of TM board risk committee.

TM said other members of the sub-Committee are two senior management members of TM who were not involved in the procurement process during the period in question.

'As the period under investigation concerns the previous integrated TM Group, TM is working closely with Axiata to extend all necessary cooperation with the relevant parties and authorities,' it said.

Meanwhile, Axiata said a board sub-committee had been set up by Axiata to conduct an independent and comprehensive internal investigation into the allegations potentially linking to its subsidiaries.

'The board sub-committee is chaired by David Lau Nai Pek, the chairman of board audit committee of Axiata,' it said.
