Nikkei jumps 1.7 pct after Wall St gains

TOKYO: Japan's Nikkei average climbed 1.7 percent on Tuesday, Aug 3 after strong European bank results and better-than-expected U.S. data boosted optimism about economic recovery and sent U.S. stocks to a 10-week closing high.

Asahi Breweries rose 1.1 percent to 1,571 yen after it said on Tuesday it is considering the future of its loss-making South Korean soft drink unit Haitai Beverage, including possibly selling it.

The benchmark Nikkei rose 160.29 points to 9,730.60, while the broader Topix gained 1.4 percent to 862.32.
