Malaysia economy to grow slower at 5.1% in 2011, says StanChart

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's GDP growth is expected to ease to 5.1% in 2011 after a strong recovery of 6.8% in 2010, according to a forecast by Standard Chartered Ban.

In its 'Global Focus 2011 - The Year Ahead' report, it said investment would lead growth in 2011 and 2012 with a slew of projects announced in Budget 2011 and the government's Economic Transformation Programme.

''We expect inflation to accelerate to 3.4% in 2011 from 1.7% in 2010 on the back of narrowing output gap and the risk of commodity prices,'' it said on Thursday, Jan 13.

The report also anticipates Bank Negara to raise the overnight policy rate by 75 basis points this year from 2.75% currently with inflation expectations likely to rise,' it said.
