Asian markets slip at midday

KUALA LUMPUR:'' Asian markets fell at midday, Tuesday, June 29 on concerns that the pace of recovery at the larger economies is slower than expected, with the Shanghai Composite Index falling more than 2.6% its lowest intraday level since April 2009.

China's key stock index dropped 2.6 percent to a 14-month low as investors started pulling funds from the market to prepare for a major initial public offering by Agricultural Bank of China. Institutions will start subscribing for AgBank's IPO on Thursday, while retail subscriptions are scheduled for early next week.

At 12.30pm, the FBM KLCI edged up 0.06 % or 0.77 of a point to 1,326.31 at the mid-day break, lifted by gains including CIMB, Sime Darby, YTL Power, PLUS, Berjaya Sports Toto, MAS and Petronas Gas.

Losers led gainers by 321 to 204, while 226 counters traded unchanged. Volume was 297.12 million shares valued at RM349.26 million.

Crude palm oil futures for the third month delivery fell RM20 per tonne to RM2,380; crude oil fell 62 cents per barrel to US$77.63 while gold gained US$1 per ounce to US$1,239.95.

Among the major gainers, CIMB, Sime Darby, YTL Power and PLUS added two sen each to RM7.07, RM8.12, RM2.23 and RM3.41, respectively;'' BToto and MAS up three sen each to RM4.33 and RM2.12 while Petgas added five sen to RM9.90.

Other gainers included Top Glove, C.I. Holdings, Amway, Pharmaniaga, F&N and EPIC.

Malaysian Mosaics gained 12 sen to RM1.54 after The Edge Financial Daily reported that the company could be taken private soon.

The renounceable rights shares of Sinotop fell in very active trade, down'' 25.5 sen to 15 sen with 54.97 million shares done.'' Sinotop rose six sen to 66.5 sen.

Newly-listed Kimlun Corp added half a sen to 97.5 sen with 20.43 million shares traded. Other actives included Kumpulan Europlus, Berjaya Corp, Axiata, Talam and Timecom.

Among the major losers this morning were RHB Capital that fell six sen to RM5.88, Tenaga down five sen to RM8.42 and Tanjong two sen to RM17.74.

Other decliners included Allianz, Panasonic, Hai-O, Malayan Flour Mills and Chin Teck.
