KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 6): Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) has gained significant in-roads into the 110th Canton Fair
with a total of RM42.336 million of sales achieved at the five-day fair, which ended last Friday.
Malaysian participants, who are mostly from the food and health sector also managed to close immediate sales of RM518,000 during the fair, said Matrade CEO Dr Wong Lai Sum.
"China itself, with its huge population, offers an enormous market coupled with the growing numbers of investors, there is now a large demand for a variety of food tailors for the international palette.
"Many foreigners frequent this fair every year and there is opportunity not only to sell to China but also to these new markets," he said in a statement
sent here.
The Canton Fair, a prestigious biannually event since 1957, was held every spring and autumn in Guangzhou. It attracted wide patronage of overseas buyers and huge business turnover in China.
With a strong presence of foreign buyers at the fair, Malaysia hoped to promote its exports, especially food and beverages, health and wellness
products, and to provide strategic platform to tap the huge China and global markets.
It also hoped to promote Malaysia's image as a reliable source of imports for high quality and competitive products and to promote Matrade's services to
foreign and local importers for sourcing of products from Malaysia.
Following the success this time, Matrade said it is also planning to bring a bigger group of participants to the next Canton Fair in April 2012. - Reuters
