Stocks, dollar slip on weak economic outlook

NEW YORK: World stocks fell, snapping a four-day rally on Wednesday, July 28 as weak orders for U.S. durable goods in June and the Federal Reserve's downbeat take on the economy dampened the outlook and drove the dollar lower.

New orders for long-lasting U.S. manufactured goods fell unexpectedly for a second straight month, marking their largest decline since August, in a fresh sign the economy had slowed in the second quarter. But some analysts said the report was respectable after stripping out certain categories.

The Fed's Beige Book report, a summary of U.S. economic conditions, indicated activity was not as robust in a few districts and had lost steam over the past several weeks.

A rally built on strong earnings lifted the broad Standard & Poor's 500 index on Monday to close above its 200-day moving average, a closely watched measure of market direction.

But the Fed's assessment of the economy and weak data weighed on sentiment.

"Earnings have been good, but the overall economy is still sluggish at best and is not coming back as much as we would have hoped," said Ryan Detrick, senior technical strategist at Schaeffer's Investment Research in Cincinnati.

MSCI's all-country world index dipped 0.12 percent, and the Thomson Reuters global stock index was slightly lower.

DESPITE PULLBACK, DOW UP FOR YEAR

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 39.81 points, or 0.38 percent, to end at 10,497.88. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index fell 7.71 points, or 0.69 percent, to finish at 1,106.13. The Nasdaq Composite Index slipped 23.69 points, or 1.04 percent, to close at 2,264.56.

Even with Wednesday's decline, the Dow was still in positive territory for the year, while the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq were slightly lower for 2010 so far.

With the S&P's 200-day moving average at about 1,114, traders are trying to determine where it has peaked or represents a consolidation point before further gains.

U.S. corporate results continued to surprise on the upside.

Defense contractor General Dynamics Corp and ConocoPhillips, the third-largest U.S. oil company, both posted stronger-than-expected quarterly profits.

After almost half of the S&P 500 having reported earnings, 77 percent of companies have beat expectations, according to Thomson Reuters Proprietary Research.

The dollar fell against the yen and eased against the euro as the weaker-than-expected reading of U.S. durable goods orders added to fears about the economy.

The dollar was down against a basket of major currencies, with the U.S. Dollar Index down 0.07 percent at 82.126.

The euro was up 0.02 percent at $1.2996.

Against the yen, the dollar was down 0.50 percent at 87.44.

Sterling hit a five-month high against the dollar at $1.5630 as earlier comments from the Bank of England did little to quell optimism about the UK economic outlook.

BONDS RISE AFTER AUCTION AND DATA

The Commerce Department said U.S. durable goods orders fell 1.0 percent in June after a revised 0.8 percent drop in May. Analysts forecast an increase of 1.0 percent.

But Michael Woolfolk, senior currency strategist at BNY Mellon in New York, said the durable goods report is always difficult to digest. The number was negative because of commercial aircraft orders, he said.

"If you strip out aircraft and defense, you're left with a respectable rise of 0.6 percent" in the important capital goods category, he said.

Those orders were up 15.2 percent on a year-on-year basis.

"That's consistent with a strong recovery in industrial production and durable goods orders. So these numbers are not very concerning," Woolfolk said.

Treasuries rose following a strongly bid auction of $37 billion in five-year notes, which sold at yields that were lower than the same notes trading at the time in the open market.

"The market just sort of took today's data and said, 'You know what? There's still a huge demand for Treasuries; the economy's not as strong as we want it, I think we'll go ahead and buy these things,'" said Todd Colvin, vice president at MF Global in Chicago.

The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note gained 13/32 in price to yield 3.00 percent after trading flat at midday.

OIL DROPS, COPPER CLIMBS

Oil prices fell a second straight day on a surprise crude oil inventory build and weak economic data.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration inventory report showed crude stocks rose 7.31 million barrels last week as imports jumped. A Reuters analyst survey had forecast crude oil stocks would be down 1.6 million barrels.

"The crude data looks decidedly bearish," said Jim Ritterbusch, president at Ritterbusch & Associates in Galena, Illinois.

U.S. crude for September delivery fell 51 cents, or 0.66 percent, to settle at $76.99 a barrel.

ICE Brent slipped 7 cents to settle at $76.06 a barrel.

Copper rose to its highest point since early May after assurances on economic growth from top metals consumer China and improving fundamentals.

U.S. gold futures for August delivery climbed $2.40 to settle at $1,160.40 an ounce.

Earlier, Japan's Nikkei climbed 2.7 percent for its highest close and biggest one-day gain in two weeks. MSCI's index for Asian stocks less Japan trimmed gains to trade flat. - Reuters

Nikkei slips 1 pct after 2-week closing high

TOKYO: Japan's Nikkei fell 1 percent on Thursday, July 29 with investors taking profits after the index hit a two-week closing high the previous day, after weak orders for U.S. durable goods in June and the Federal Reserve's downbeat take on the economy dampened the outlook.

The benchmark Nikkei shed 99.76 points to 9,653.51. It climbed 2.7 percent on Wednesday to 9,753.27, its highest close since July 14.

The broader Topix lost 0.7 percent to 859.39

In Seoul, shares opened lower on Thursday, weighed by exporters such as LG Display'' after weak economic data from the United States, South Korea's No.3 export market.

Shares in LG Electronics fell 1.5 percent following weak second quarter earnings and bearish third quarter outlook comments on Wednesday.

The Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) was down 0.16 percent at 1,770.66 points as of 0002 GMT. - Reuters

Finance stocks lift FBM KLCI

KUALA LUMPUR: Share prices on Bursa Malaysia closed higher on Wednesday, July 28, lifted by gains in finance-related stock such as CIMB Group, dealers said.

At 5pm, the FBM KLCI rose 2.96 points or 0.22 per cent to close at its new high in the 2009-2010 rally at 1,355.19.

The benchmark index opened 0.42 of a point higher at 1,352.65 in the morning and traded within a range of 5.51 points between an intra-day high of 1,356.13 and a low of 1,350.62 during the trading session.

One of the dealers said the market started the day on a mixed note as investors were worried about the health of the global economy after mixed corporate results and a fall in consumer confidence data were reported in the US.

However, he said the rally in key Asian markets spurred buying interest in the local market.

The follow-through buying in finance-related stocks led by CIMB Group helped the FBM KLCI to finish the day at its new high in the 2009-2010 rally.

At close, the Finance Index rose 60.60 points to 12,341.22, the PLANTATION [] Index increased 9.34 points to 6,416.94 and the INDUSTRIAL INDEX [] added 2.38 points to 2,673.18.

Reuters reported mjor Southeast Asian stock markets posted small gains, supported by favourable quarterly earnings against a background of strong regional growth.

However, broker Citi said the earnings outlook for the second half was not as good in several Asian countries as export markets weakened and some stock markets could suffer if profit forecasts were revised down.

"Indonesia remains most vulnerable to poor revisions. The market has been re-rating as the next India but the earnings story is beginning to look less robust," the broker said.

But it added: "India, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand have all seen their earnings outlook improve versus the prior month."

Singapore's main share index pushed 0.2 percent higher and hovered around three-month highs, while Malaysia inched up 0.2
percent, to just below a 29-month peak hit the previous day.

Indonesia, Asia's second best performer after Sri Lanka, finished up 0.5 percent, at one point touching a record high of 3,064.79. The Philippines was up 0.5 percent, extending gains to two-week highs.

Thailand, Asia's third-best performer, ended flat, coming off an intra-day peak of 860, a 26-month high. Vietnam bucked the trend and fell 1.34 percent.

In Singapore, big banks gained ahead of their quarterly results. DBS Group, Southeast Asia's largest lender, was up 0.6 percent ahead of its results on Friday. Oversea Chinese Banking Corp, which is due to release its quarterly earnings next week, rose 0.8 percent.

Financial firms outperformed in Kuala Lumpur, with Hong Leong jumping 2.1 percent and CIMB Group up 1.2 percent. In Jakarta, dominant car seller Astra International, rose 1.4 percent to a record high.

Optimism over the second-half performance boosted Thai shares further, following a slew of quarterly results, although the market is seen as overbought on some indicators.

The SET index's 14-day relative strength index (RSI) was at 77.15 at the close on Wednesday. Others were below 70. An RSI level of 70 and higher indicates the market is overbought.

Top industrial conglomerate Siam Cement, a bellwether of Thai economic health, gained 1.1 percent to a three-week high after its quarterly profit beat forecasts and it raised its sales target for the year.

Among other weak spots in the region, Astra Agro Lestari, Indonesia's biggest listed palm oil plantation firm, dropped 3.7 percent after it said first-half net profit fell 17 percent.

In Manila, shares in San Miguel surged 10 percent after the Philippine conglomerate said it could raise around $1.6 billion by selling shares and would pay a special dividend.- Bernama/Reuters

MAS eyes 5% annual revenue growth from charter services

KUALA LUMPUR: MALAYSIAN AIRLINE SYSTEM BHD [] (MAS) expects a 5% annual growth in revenue from charter services due to high demand and the availability of resources, its head of hajj and charter department, Capt. Nik Ahmad Huzlan Nik Hussain said.

Last year, MAS recorded about RM200 million in revenue from its charter flights, including hajj services.

"The charter flight business is very much a side business for MAS. We only pursue it whenever there is a request," he told reporters after a signing ceremony between MAS and travel agency, Apple Vacations & Conventions, here on Wednesday, July 28.

Under a RM2.0 million contract, Apple Vacations would use MAS' A330-300 aircraft to facilitate three direct charter flights between Kuala Lumpur and Hokkaido, Japan, in December this year.

Nik Ahmad Huzlan said the national airline saw increasing demand for charter services, especially, for high-end travelers and special initiatives like peacekeeping missions and critical auto parts freight.

"The charter services are not exclusive to any individual. We also cater to corporate customers. We have received a lot of applications from inviduals as well as organisations.

"Our charter flights are especially for places that are difficult to get to and which other airlines refuse to service," he explained.

He said MAS' charter services for both passenger and freight movement is well known and much sought after by the government, associations and world renowned sports bodies like the English Premier League (EPL) and Formula One (F1).

MAS handles about 300 charter flights for hajj services annually and between 500 and 600 flights for the same period for other travellers and on special request. '' ''

On the deal with Apple Vacations, Nik Ahmad Huzlan said MAS is looking forward to working closely with the company and hoped the relationship will continue into the future.

"This is our first charter service with a travel agency and we are looking to collaborate with others as well," he added.

He noted that the collaboration with Apple Vacations would enable MAS to attract tourists from Hokkaido to Malaysia, as currently there is no direct service between the city and Kuala Lumpur.

The direct charter flights on MAS would help reduce travel time by a whopping 60%. This leaves holiday-makers with more time to spend in Malaysia. - Bernama
